Luck

I feel like the luckiest girl ever. I get to hang out with my kid all day. I'm studying for my dream job. Probably about 99% of the stress in my life disappeared almost overnight. Then I remember that it's not just luck. I started thinking about the luck aspect when a (former) coworker told me "how lucky(!)" I was that I got to stay home with Oliver. It bugged me and, at first, I couldn't figure out why. It was because luck didn't have a lot to do with it. I am able to stay at home with Oliver and live the life I have been dreaming of because of smart choices and sacrifices. We only have one car. It's getting old now, but it's functional and we take good care of it. I love my car and hope that it lasts forever. I don't WANT a car payment, even if it means I could have a shiny new car. We bought a condo instead of a house. I don't think it's small, but compared to the average house size, it's well below. We don't have a yar...

Happy NaNoWriMo / NaBloPoMo / Seahawks Win / Sunday!

It's officially November! I've packed up the Halloween stuff and I'm ready to enjoy a month of fall before we break out the Christmas stuff after thanksgiving dinner! That means football and chili and pumpkin everything! No Christmas in our house until we've fully appreciated and embraced fall and all its unique beauty. November means that it's also time for NaNoWriMo! For the uninitiated, that stands for National Novel Writing Month! I plan to write, and finish, an ENTIRE NOVEL this month! I started my first NaNoWriMo attempt in November of 2011, but was thrown off a horse the day before my first wedding anniversary (November 5th) and there was no more novel writing for me that month. I am going to pick up where I left off and work on the same novel... something I've been mulling over for years. I'm also going to participate in NaBloPoMo, which means that I'll be posting on my blog every day this month, as well, to try to get back into the habit of wr...

Mommyhood

Image
It's been just under 27 days since I birthed a baby. Oliver is snuggled up on my chest in the Moby right now, allowing me to use both of my hands while he sleeps. We're getting the hang of this. Finally. After about a week and a half of creepy postpartum symptoms, and then the guilt over feeling them at all, Ollie and I are settling into a routine. Marc's mom is here right now, which has been comforting, especially because, for a little while, I was wondering if I would be able to do this on my own… a sort of new mommy panic. Having her here has been like knowing that there is a safety net, but I have been feeling lately like I CAN do this on my own. Sleeping is going okay some nights and not so okay other nights, but either way, I feel like I am getting enough sleep. Enough to function, enough not to break down into tears. Man, I miss my eight or nine hours in a row… now I would even be over the moon to get four or five solid hours in a row. Every morning, wh...

My "Sounds of Seattle" playlist for Confront Magazine!

Image
I wrote a "Sounds of Seattle" playlist for Confront Magazine , and I've gotten some really nice feedback on it. I few of my Facebook friends have even told me that they discovered new music because of it. That makes me so happy! After all, that's why I write. There are a lot of bands that I really love, and I would love to introduce them to more people! One of the bands, The Head and the Heart , has a new album out tomorrow! Since I reviewed Let's Be Still for Confront Magazine (the review will be up on Wednesday!) I've had the record for about a week, AND I pre-ordered the Loser edition from Sub Pop and it showed up on Saturday. I've already memorized most of the songs and I'm in LOVE. It's so good. Two of the other bands (Bryan John Appleby and Deep Sea Diver) are playing a show together in December. ( Tickets are still on sale ! Come play with me.) I have reviews of the new Pearl Jam and Avett Brothers coming up at the end of this month....

Joy in the form of pumpkin cider and cool weather.

There are few things I like more than Friday nights. I had a pretty productive day at work. I got to do some work outside of the scope of my normal duties and hole up in a conference room with Marc and one of my other favorite coworkers. It was a good end to a very busy week. I don't think I'll ever be the kind of person who doesn't want to have a job at all, because there's nothing more fulfilling than working really hard and then enjoying your time off, as I am currently doing. Sometimes, on Friday nights, Marc lets his freak flag fly and plays Friday night Magic at any number of game stores around town. Tonight he's playing at Card Kingdom, which is this awesome game store that happens to be attached to this great little cafe called Cafe Mox. I'm enjoying a pumpkin cider and getting ready to order a hummus and pita plate while scheduling my upcoming album reviews for Confront Magazine (I've got Pearl Jam, The Head and the Heart, and The Avett B...

I feel like a big kid journalist.

Image
Today was an exhausting, wonderful day. When I first met my friend Melissa on Twitter, I found somebody who shared a love of Harry Potter, writing and music. Meeting her has been one of my best social media experiences so far, because (through Twitter), I found out that the online music magazine that she writes for (and turns out, actually RUNS) wanted to hire more journalists. I applied and submit a writing sample, and was welcomed onto the team! Since then, I have had the opportunity to review new albums, interview bands and artists and do what I love... write about music. It hasn't always been easy; working a (more than) full time job in "real life" and then making time to sit at the computer after a 8-10 hour day at work to write about music. But I stuck with it and I'm so glad. Today, an e-mail interview that I did with DJ Ashba (lead guitarist for Sixx A.M. and Guns N' Roses) exploded with page hits (thanks in large part to the promotion by Ashba himse...
